"Sparky"( Rammy-lamby x Uma) Sparky is piebald wether (neutered male) and the son of Rammy-lamby and Uma. Genetically speaking, the piebald gene is for white spots. So Sparky is actually a black sheep with an enormous white spot! He is a triplet born in March 2004. His siblings are Panda and Emmi. Sparky has especially cool markings for a piebald Finnsheep. Usually they are black with irregularly shaped splotches of white. Sparky's wool has a very loose crimp, but is incredibly soft! His lamb fleece won Reserve Grand Champion at the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival in 2005. That is second place out of the whole show of 82 fleeces! Here is a photo of his prize winning fleece. Sparky had a very rough start in life. First he had trouble being born. Then he appeared to be a bit premature and had no suckle reflex, so he had to be tube fed for quite a while. He also had trouble walking, perhaps because he seemed to have sort-of squished up in the womb. Then he developed pneumonia and had to endure oral antibiotics and then antibiotic injections to save his life. Because of his small size he could not compete with his brother and sister for milk so he became my first bottle lamb. His mother still took care of him otherwise and never rejected him, so he continued to live with his family. One of my friends calls him "The Little Prince" since he knows he is special. It is really a miracle that Sparky is alive. I am still amazed everytime I see him that he has survived long enough to grow into a sheep! Because of Sparky's tough start in life, whenever we would drink a toast at Firefly Fields, we always drink "To Sparky"!
