Sheep for Sale

"Short Tail" is for sale.

Short Tail's Pedigree

(Photo will be available on 9/14/08.)

Short Tail is a "proven" white ram owned by my friend and sheep mentor Sandy DeMaster. Sandy has had one of the premiere Finnsheep flocks in the U.S. for 10 years and did a lot of work in improving the quality of the wool in the colored Finnsheep. She also organized the importation of frozen semen from Finland back in 1989 to bring in new genetics. She is retiring from breeding sheep and just keeping a few ewes and wethers as pets. So she is selling all her rams.

Short Tail's wool is fine and has a narrow crimp. He is 50% out of the new genetics from Finland, as both of his grandfathers were rams in Finland. See his pedigree. He has produced white and black lambs in the past, so she believes he probably does not carry for brown. Sandy is no longer maintaining a website and her computer has been "hospitalized", so I offered to list her ram for sale here.

One of Short Tail's grandfathers, Riski, is found in very few pedigrees in the U.S. When the frozen semen was collected in Finland, there was some problem and only 2 straws of the semen from Riski were obtained. (This was a shame because the shepherds at the state flock at Pelso believed him to be one of their best rams.) Because Sandy had done all the work to organize the importation, she was allowed to have these straws. Only one ram, Prince, was ever conceived from this semen. Prince is the sire of Short Tail.

His maternal grandmother, Wendy II, was the matriarch of Sandy's flock for many years. Sandy always felt this was her best line. While Wendy II was not a very large ewe, she and her offspring have always been excellent mothers and produce a lot of milk.

Sandy is asking $300, but is most concerned with getting a good home for him. The buyer is responsible for transport and the cost of traveling papers - if you are taking him out of state.

Sandy's flock has certified status under the SFCP (Voluntary Scrapie Program) and she has had several flock tests which were negative for Johnnes and OPP.
